Conifers
Heldreich's pine
Р. heldreichii Christ
The species is named after the German-Greek biologist and botanist Theodor Heldreich. In cultivation since 1851. Its native range is considered to be the mountains of southeastern Europe. It occurs in the Balkan Mountains, in southern Italy (symbol of Pollino National Park), in the Bosnian mountains, in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania and Serbia. It grows at altitudes of 900-2500 m above sea level, often reaching the alpine tree line. Long-lived. The oldest tree was found in Bulgaria; its age is over 1,300 years.
A conifer species of the genus Pinus in the family Pinaceae. A tree up to 20 (25-35) m in height and 4.5-8.5 m in width, trunk diameter up to 2 m. At 40 years it reaches 9 m in height. Crown ranges from narrowly conical to broadly spreading, low-hanging, somewhat procumbent in form. The tree is slow-growing, annual increment 20-25 cm in height and 10 cm in width. At about 15 years height growth slows significantly. Root system is deep and well developed. The bark of old trees is ashy-gray and plated. On young branches, after the needles fall, large rhomboid leaf cushions remain, covering the branches like armor (hence the pine's name "armored").
Needles dense, but less compact than those of the black pine, long, 6-12 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, light green in color, clustered at the tips, borne in fascicles of 2.
Cones solitary or in pairs (sometimes in threes), ovoid in shape, 7-8 cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter, ranging from yellowish to brown in color. The scale apophyses are almost flat with a slightly convex umbo. Seeds are elliptical, 6-7 mm long, wing 2.2-3 cm long.
Hardiness zone 6a.
Cultivars: f. typica, f. Leucodermis, Satellite, Compact Jam, Schmidtii, Den Ouden.
Site: grows well on calcareous soils, tolerates harsh mountain conditions, resistant to urban pollution. Sun-loving. Does not favor very dry climates. Does not tolerate waterlogging. Wind-resistant.
Planting and pruning: planting and pruning are carried out as for Scots pine (
Propagation: propagated by seed.
Diseases and pests: resistant to most diseases and pests.
Uses: used in group and solitary plantings. Suitable for landscaping parks and large gardens. Used for afforestation of calcareous (limestone) mountains.
