Hatiora

Hatiora

Back to catalogue
Family Cactaceae. Native to Brazil. It is a close relative of Schlumbergera. In nature there are only 4 species of these succulent epiphytes. Hatiora is often mistaken for the Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera). However, Hatiora is easy to distinguish by the flower structure — it has radial symmetry with a short, non-curved floral tube. Schlumbergera, on the other hand, has a zygomorphic flower with a curved floral tube. In addition, Hatiora segments are more rounded in shape and often have a reddish tint.

Hatiora gaertneri blooms with bright red flowers, Hatiora graeseri with flowers red outside and pink on the inside, Hatiora rosea may have flowers in various shades from pink to purple.

Hatiora salicornioides — completely unlike the other species; it consists of numerous branches that become pendulous over time, with club-shaped segments about 0.5–1 cm thick and up to 3 cm long. It gives the impression that the plant is made up of small sticks. Flowering can be very abundant; at that time the plant is covered with dozens of small yellow flowers that form at the tips of the shoots. Over the years the plant may require support to give it a tree-like shape.

Temperature: Keep at moderate or slightly cool temperatures around 18-20°C. From September to October a rest period should be provided at temperatures not exceeding 15°C, with completely dry conditions. After flowering a rest period is also necessary, lasting until the end of May; watering during this time is limited and conditions are cool. Winter minimum 10°C.

Light: A bright location, light partial shade, but be sure to protect from direct sunlight. Grows well on a north-facing windowsill.

Watering: From the appearance of buds until the end of flowering water abundantly — the soil should remain moist at all times. During the rest period the frequency of watering depends on the air temperature.

Fertilizer: Feed Hatiora three weeks after repotting (in early summer, after flowering) with a special balanced cactus fertilizer, every two weeks until the end of August.

Air humidity: Occasional misting.
