Back to catalogue
Family Amaryllidaceae. Native to South Africa, the island of Socotra. In nature there are about 50 species of herbaceous plants, somewhat differing in appearance from the amaryllis familiar to us. The old name of Haemanthus is Scadoxus.

Haemanthus Katharina - gemantus katharinae - a perennial bulbous plant. The bulb is about 8 cm in diameter, rounded in shape, set into the substrate to about half its depth. The leaves form a rosette, broadly lanceolate or oval with a wavy margin. The leaves are thin, with a closed sheath, light green in color, up to 40 cm long and about 15 cm wide. The scape is leafless, up to 60 cm long. The umbel-shaped inflorescence about 20 cm in diameter has red bracts. This species has a dormancy period in autumn to early winter.
