Guzmania

Guzmania

Back to catalogue
Family Bromeliaceae. About 80-90 species of this plant are known, native to the West Indies and the southwestern region of South America. The name was given in honor of A. Guzman, a Spanish naturalist and plant collector plants. It has been cultivated indoors since the early 19th century. Includes 120 species.

In indoor culture, Guzmania magnifica, Guzmania lingulata and Guzmania intermedia are encountered.

Guzmanias are usually grown for their spectacular inflorescences. Guzmania is a medium-sized plant; all its species form magnificent bracts surrounding small flowers. The bracts are arranged in a star shape and can be pale orange or scarlet in color, which lasts for a very long time. The flowers, more often white or green, are inconspicuous and die very quickly. Easy-to-grow guzmanias decorate interiors excellently. They can be used as solitary specimens, but they look best in compositions. Like other plants of the bromeliad family, guzmanias die after flowering, but they can be very easily propagated by offsets that form around the flowering plant. Guzmania usually blooms in summer, although in some cases the inflorescence may appear at another time of year.
