Family Malvaceae. Pharmaceutical name: cotton root bark - Gossypii cortex radicis (formerly: Cortex Gossypii radicis).
Botanical description. A shrub with yellow flowers. Many varieties are cultivated in tropical and subtropical countries (mainly for cotton production).
Active constituents: a resinous substance of red and yellow colors (gossypol).
Healing properties and uses. Especially often used in homeopathy to reduce negative symptoms in women during menopause and for irregular menstruation. Galenic preparations are made from the cotton root bark, acting similarly to drugs derived from ergot.
