Back to catalogue
Family Liliaceae. Native to the humid tropical forests of South Asia and Africa. The attractive tuberous species cultivated is represented by Gloriosa superba. A perennial climber with shoots that require support. Leaves are light green, alternately arranged, narrow-lanceolate in shape, with tips spirally coiled like tendrils.

Flowers solitary, large — up to 10 cm in diameter. The long petals are bright red with a yellow wavy edge, bent back toward the pedicel; there is a cultivar 'gloriosa yellow' which has yellow twisted petals. Flowering occurs in late summer to early autumn.
