Family Rubiaceae. Native to South Africa, China, India. These are evergreen shrubs or small trees; about 250 species of the genus Gardenia can be found in nature. As a houseplant the most common is Jasmine gardenia - Gardenia jasminoides. This is a shrub reaching 1.5 - 1.8 m in height in natural conditions or in a greenhouse; at home it forms a bush about 45 - 50 cm high.

Jasmine gardenia has glossy green leaves of a broad-lanceolate shape, up to 10 cm long. Flowers are either solitary or grouped in corymbs of 4-6. Flowers are about 5-7 cm in diameter, double or semi-double, white and pleasantly fragrant. It blooms mainly in summer or autumn.
