Flowers for the garden

Tuberous geranium

G. tuberosum

Back to catalogue

Family Geraniaceae. It originates from Southern Europe and Turkey; it became available to gardeners in 1596.

It does indeed form tuberous-thickened roots. In April–June, purple-pink flowers 2–3 cm in diameter bloom against the backdrop of deeply cut leaves. The leaves die back in autumn, but they regrow before the onset of winter. This geranium prefers bright sunlight and well-drained soil; otherwise it flowers poorly.
