Family Asteraceae. Native to the western states of North America.
Perennial plant. Stems erect, bending in the lower part, densely pubescent, up to 75 cm tall, require staking. Leaves simple, oblong-oval or lanceolate, entire or toothed, pubescent; basal leaves petiolate, stem leaves sessile. Inflorescences solitary, up to 12 cm in diameter. Ray florets are variegated, brightly colored, predominantly in shades of yellow, orange and copper-red; disc florets are yellow-purple. Flowers from June. In cultivation since 1812.
