Family: Fucaceae. Common names: bladderwrack, sea oak, pig fucus. Parts used: thalli of both species of algae. Pharmacopoeial name: fucus - Fucus vesiculosus.

Botanical description. The bladderwrack and knotted fucus belong to the group of brown algae inhabiting the shallow waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the northern and western parts of the Baltic Sea, and also the Pacific Ocean. The strap-shaped, dichotomously branching fronds of the fucus reach up to 1 m in length and have a stiff central midrib and air bladders, most often arranged in pairs. Beds of fucus often form extensive growths. They are collected with nets and quickly dried.
