Family Asphodelaceae. Occurs on open rocky mountain slopes and along roads in the Mediterranean region of Western Europe, Syria, Iran and Afghanistan; another name is onion weed.

An annual plant up to 40 cm tall. Inflorescence racemose, loose, often branched. Flowers 1.2–1.4 cm long, pinkish-white, with a pink longitudinal stripe on the perianth segments. Stem leafless. Leaves basal, narrow, cylindrical, hollow, with membranous broad sheaths. Blooms in mid to late summer. Little known in cultivation. Undemanding, grows on any soil with sufficient watering. Propagated by seeds, blooms in the first year.
