Family Umbelliferae. Pharmaceutical name: galbanum (dried gum) - Galbanum.

Botanical description. An umbelliferous plant up to 1-2 m in height; the ribs on the stem contain channels with milky sap. It grows in Iran and Afghanistan.

Active constituents: gum-like substances, essential oil and a number of other bactericidal substances.

Therapeutic action and uses. Previously it was administered internally as a tincture for various inflammations and painful menstruation. At present it is only occasionally included in liniments for rheumatic pains.
