Ferocactus

Ferocactus

Back to catalogue
Family Cactaceae. Native range - the desert regions of Mexico and southern USA. This genus includes about 35 species. Most of them are of enormous size and are not well suited for growing as houseplants. Those that have become widespread in indoor conditions do not flower. They are, however, valued for the unusual and beautiful spines.

Ferocactus plants also have a particular characteristic - during the growth period a sweet syrup is exuded from the center of the rosette of spines, which hardens forming sugar crystals. It is recommended to remove it carefully or wash it off with a brush moistened with alcohol.

Ferocactus latispinus (broad-spined ferocactus or "devil's tongue") - Ferocactus latispinus - stem globular, with about 15-21 ribs, on which are located rosettes of powerful white or pink spines. One lower spine of a broad, flat form is colored bright red or yellow and hooked at the tip.

Ferocactus robustus (robust ferocactus) - Ferocactus robustus - stem globular, large, 8 ribs. Brown or red spines slightly flattened in shape.

Temperature: Moderate. In winter a rest period at 8-10°C, minimum 7°C, with dry conditions. In summer it is better to keep them outdoors.

Lighting: Bright sunlight both in winter and in summer.

Watering: Moderate in spring and summer, reduced from autumn, and very infrequent in winter if kept cold.

Fertilizer: From late spring to mid-summer ferocacti are fed with a special cactus fertilizer.

Humidity: Ferocacti tolerate dry air, but regular spraying with warm water is very beneficial.
