Feijoa
Feijoa
Family Myrtaceae. Native to South America. This evergreen tree or shrub reaches up to 6 meters in height in its natural conditions. Six species occur in the wild.
As a houseplant, Feijoa Sellow - Feijoa sellowiana is cultivated. Leaves are oppositely arranged, oval in shape, thick and leathery. The upper surface is gray-green, the underside silvery. Flowers on long pedicels are either solitary or gathered in sparse axillary inflorescences, not large — about 3-4 cm in diameter.
The flower has 4 petals, rather thick, strongly reflexed, red inside and white outside. From the center of the flower numerous long red stamens with yellow anthers project attractively. They make the flowers very showy. The fruit is an edible berry with small seeds.
Temperature: Like all Myrtaceae, it requires moderate temperatures and does not like heat. In winter it prefers 10-12°C.
Lighting: Feijoa is a light-loving plant, it grows well on west and east windows. On a south-facing window it will need shading in summer.
Watering: Abundant from spring to autumn, but avoid excessive moisture. In winter water so that the soil does not dry out completely. It is better to use warm soft water for irrigation.
Fertilizer: From March to August feed feijoa with a complete fertilizer for houseplants. Feed every two weeks.
Air humidity: Although feijoa is considered tolerant of dry air, in hot summers and in winter when it is not possible to keep the plant in a cool room, misting is necessary. To keep the plant healthy, developing well and fruiting, mist it once a day with warm soft water.
