Bamboo family. Native to Northern China.

Most cold-hardy of the bamboos, tolerates cold down to -27° C. Plant up to 3 m tall. Culms thick, yellow, young ones green. Leaves bluish-green, broad, lanceolate, glossy above, matte beneath. Prefers light soils. For the plant to grow attractively, it should remain in the same place as long as possible. Does not tolerate pruning. Propagated by dividing clumps.
