Family: Euphorbiaceae. Succulent plant up to 2 m tall, bushy from the base or with a well-defined main stem branching in a whorled manner.

Stems fleshy, succulent, up to 20 cm thick, triangular in cross-section, ribbed. The ribs are unevenly notched, along the edges with large (up to 7 cm), yellowish-brown or gray (initially green), sharp, hard spines (modified stipules) arranged in pairs at right or obtuse angles to each other, and with quickly deciduous leaves. Flowers small, yellow, gathered into complex corymb-like inflorescences located on the ribs. Native range - East Africa; grows in the mountains.
