Family Acanthaceae. Native to subtropical regions, India. About 30 species in cultivation.
Eranthemum Watt - Eranthemum wattii - is a branching shrub up to 1 meter tall. Leaves are opposite, petiolate, ovate in shape, acute at the tip, up to 15 cm long, with a rough surface. Flowers are gathered in terminal spike-like inflorescences. The corolla is five-lobed, at the beginning of flowering pink, then dark lilac.
Eranthemum pulchellum - is a shrub about 1.2 meters tall. Leaves are opposite, petiolate, ovate in shape, acute at the tip, up to 20 cm long, with a rough surface. Flowers are gathered in terminal spike-like inflorescences with large white bracts. The corolla is five-lobed, asymmetrical in shape, bright blue, about 2.5 cm long.
Temperature: Moderate. Winter minimum 15°C. In summer place outdoors in partial shade.
Light: Bright light with a small amount of direct sunlight. An east-facing window is suitable. On south and west windows shading may be required during the hottest hours.
Watering: Abundant from spring to autumn. The soil should remain slightly moist. In winter watering is limited.
Humidity: Regular misting; occasionally a warm shower can be given. When kept in a heated room in winter, the pot with Eranthemum can be placed on a tray with water.
Repotting: Annually in spring. Soil - 1 part turf, 1 part humus, 1 part leaf mold and 1 part sand.
