Flowers for the garden

Nadborodnik

Epipogium

Back to catalogue

Family Orchidaceae. The genus nadborodnik includes only 2 species distributed in Eurasia, Africa and Australia.

The form of the flowers is unusual for all European orchids. In their development they do not go through the stage of resupination, i.e. the turning resulting from the twisting of the ovary (usually by 180°). As a result the labellum acquires an abnormal orientation - it is directed upwards (hence the name of the genus: in Greek epi - "up", pogon - "beard").
