Echinocereus

Back to catalogue
Family Cactaceae. This genus includes about 100 species of cacti very diverse in appearance. Within the genus Echinocereus three groups of cacti are distinguished: small plants with cylindrical stems and spines in comb-like arrangements; globose milk-spined cacti; and large, branching cacti with strong spines.

Echinocereus pectinatus - globose and then cylindrical stem with numerous ribs covered with large yellow spines that become gray with age. Flowers are large - up to 12 cm in diameter, pink or yellow.

Echinocereus salm-dyckianus - with dark green cylindrical stems and yellowish spines. Blooms with large orange flowers.

Temperature: Moderate. In winter a resting period at 10-12°C, minimum 8°C, with dry conditions.

Light: Bright light both in winter and summer. Echinocereus likes a lot of light and very much enjoys direct sun.

Watering: Moderate in spring and summer, reduced from autumn, and very infrequent in winter when kept cool.

Fertilizer: From late spring to mid-summer feed with a special cactus fertilizer.

Air humidity: Echinocereus is tolerant of dry air. But regular misting with warm water from a very fine spray bottle is beneficial.
