Family Cactaceae. An ancient genus including about 10 species of large globular cacti.

They are so large that in cultivation only one species has become widespread - Echinocactus grusonii - Echinocactus grusonii. This globular cactus can grow up to 40 cm in diameter. However, over the years the globular form becomes somewhat elongated and more cylindrical. It has very sharp, strong yellowish spines. It does not flower under indoor conditions. Quite an easy cactus to cultivate.



Temperature: Moderate. In winter a rest period at 8-10°C, minimum 5°C, with dry conditions. In summer it is better kept outdoors.

Light: Bright light both in winter and in summer. Echinocactus likes a lot of light and needs direct sunlight.

Watering: Moderate in spring and summer, reduced from autumn, and very infrequent in winter when kept cool.

Fertilizer: From late spring to mid-summer Echinocactus plants are fed with a special cactus fertilizer.

Humidity: Echinocactus tolerates dry air, but regular spraying with warm water is very beneficial.
