Light shield fern

Dryopteris laeta

Back to catalogue

Family: shield ferns. Growing in the broad-leaved forests of the southern Ussuri region, when cultivated in Moscow it quickly formed thickets of lacy, triangular-shaped fronds.

Tall (up to 100 cm in height), with lacy, triangular-shaped, large light-green fronds on long stalks, this fern forms dense thickets, rapidly spreading due to long branched rhizomes that increase by 10 - 12 cm annually. Partial shade, light soils, moderate moisture — these are the keys to success when cultivating this exotic. Expansion occurs via long branched rhizomes that increase by 10-12 cm each year. It is propagated by sections of rhizomes with a renewal bud in spring or late summer. This fern is recommended for creating particularly attractive groups in semi-shade, under the canopy of deciduous trees.
