Family Hydrangeaceae. Native range - Southwestern China.

Shrub up to 2 m high, with thin branches; brown, sparsely pubescent annual shoots. Leaves thin, 5 x 2.5 cm, ovate or broadly lanceolate, with a long acuminate tip, finely serrated along the margin; bright green above, pale green below, sparsely pubescent on both sides. Inflorescences sparsely pubescent, loose half-umbels of 5-12 flowers. Flowers up to 2 cm, with purple sepals and purple-pink petals

A very striking, hardy shrub. In cultivation since 1888.
