Family Poaceae. Distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Forms dense tussocks. Stems 20–70 cm tall (form altissima - up to 120 cm). Leaves narrowly linear, smooth, erect, flat, remain green until the snow. The panicle is open, lilac or golden. There are cultivars with bronze and pale-green inflorescence coloration, with denser inflorescences and more compact tussocks; these are propagated by division of clumps.
