Plantain-leaved Doronicum
D. plantagineum L.
Family: Asteraceae. It grows wild in southwestern Europe. In England and the USA this plant is called Leopard's Bane. In Germany - Gemswurz.
Perennial plant. The flowering stem is tall, up to 80-140 cm. It is distinguished from other species by its oval-elliptic basal leaves that narrow into a long petiole and have indistinctly toothed margins. Inflorescences up to 8-12 cm in diameter. Ray and tubular florets are yellow. Flowers from late May for 40-45 days. It blooms 7-10 days later than the eastern Doronicum. Leaves die back by the end of June. In cultivation since 1560.
There is a large-flowered form (f. excelsium hort.) - stems up to 150 cm tall, heads up to 10 cm in diameter. Best cultivars: 'Miss Mason' - up to 60 cm tall; 'Harpuf Crewe' - up to 90 cm tall.
