Cuphea
Family Lythraceae. Native to Mexico, Guatemala, and the island of Jamaica. There are about 250 species in the wild.
Hyssop-leaved cuphea - Cuphea recurvata - a shrub or subshrub about 50 cm tall. Leaves opposite, on short petioles, lanceolate in shape, about 2.5 cm long and 0.5 cm wide, dark green in color. Flowers axillary, small, up to 1 cm in diameter, solitary, lilac, pink or white. The plant branches heavily and is compact in size, so it can be grown as a bonsai.
Flame-red cuphea - Cuphea ignea - a subshrub about 40 cm tall. Leaves opposite, on short petioles, ovate-lanceolate in shape, about 6 cm long and 2 cm wide, dark green in color. Flowers axillary, up to 3 cm in diameter, solitary, red with a purple throat.
Temperature: Cuphea is warmth-loving, so in summer temperatures around 20-25°C. In winter ideally 15-18°C, minimum 12°C.
Light: Cuphea is light-loving. Bright light is required, with shading from direct sun only during the hottest hours in summer.
