Ctenanthe

Ctenanthe

Back to catalogue
Family Marantaceae. Native range - the tropics of the Americas. There are 15 species in the wild. Ctenanthe is often confused with Calathea; they are indeed similar and closely related.

The most common Ctenanthe Oppenheim - Ctenanthe oppenheimiana is a tall plant, up to 90 m in height. Leaves on long petioles are oblong in shape, about 20-40 cm long. The leaf surface is velvety with light-green and cream stripes; the underside of the leaf is purple.

All Ctenanthe differ from other Marantaceae by having longer petioles (the petiole length can be equal to 2-3 times the length of the leaf or more) and a longer leaf blade.

Temperature: Ctenanthe is heat-loving; the minimum for it at any time of year is 16°C, it does not tolerate drafts or sharp temperature fluctuations. In summer the optimum is 20-25°C, in winter 18-20°C. It should also be noted that Ctenanthe does not like to be moved from place to place.

Light: Partial shade; in bright light or in places that are too dark the leaf coloration is lost. Direct sunlight should be avoided. In winter plants should not be placed close to window glass.

Watering: Abundant, moderate in winter. Water only with soft, warm water.

Fertilizer: From April to August Ctenanthe are fed with a liquid complete fertilizer for indoor ornamental foliage plants every two weeks; the fertilizer is used at half the recommended dose. The plant is sensitive to excess fertilization. After repotting, Ctenanthe are not fertilized for at least a month.
