Cryptanthus

Back to catalogue

Family: Bromeliaceae. It is a small terrestrial plant native to the Brazilian forests.

Cryptanthus are valued for the multicolored leaf patterns and compact size. As a result of breeding work, plants with leaves in a range of color variations have been produced. In summer watering is regular, using settled or rainwater; in winter very moderate. Frequent misting is beneficial.

Placement of Cryptanthus: They grow in any light conditions, from sunny (but protected from direct rays during summer midday hours) to shady, except for deep shade. Optimal temperature is 18–20°C in winter, 22–28°C in summer.

Propagation of Cryptanthus: by sowing freshly collected seeds or by division, when the daughter rosettes reach half the size of the mother plant. Best during spring repotting.

Watering and feeding of Cryptanthus: watering sparingly with soft cool water; the plant tolerates dry air well, but occasional misting will not hurt. Feed every 2 weeks in summer with a small amount of houseplant fertilizer. Do not use fertilizers during winter.
