Back to catalogue

Birch family. Best suited to harsh growing conditions. One of the distinguishing features of this species is exceptional shade tolerance. Young plants can develop only in shade. Very rare in cultivation, but can undoubtedly be recommended for parks and forest parks.

A shaggy trunk, covered with glossy light-yellow bark, and a peculiar crown shape give it an original appearance throughout the year. A common species of the foothills, a companion of coniferous species in the Khabarovsk and Primorsky regions, northeastern China and North Korea. Grows in deciduous and mixed mountain forests. A shade-tolerant mesophyte, microtherm, microtroph, associate of cedar-broadleaf and cedar-birch forests. In the collections of botanical gardens of Europe, rarely North America, the Far East and East Asia.

A straight, slender tree up to 30 m tall, with a spreading open crown. The largest birch of the Far East. Lives under favorable conditions up to 80-100 years. Shoots are shortly pubescent when young. Leaves are elongate-oval with a strongly elongated acuminate tip, thick, dark green, densely pubescent when unfolding. In autumn they turn various shades of yellow.

Requires moist soil and air. Tolerates urban conditions, does not tolerate soil compaction, reacts poorly to pruning and transplanting. Can be recommended for landscape groups in mixture with cedar and other coniferous species. Very effective in combination with Far Eastern maples: false Siebold's, small-leaved, Manchurian. In cultivation since 1880.
