Appearance: shrub or small tree, 1-5 m high, 2-4 m wide, branches arranged vertically, slow-growing.
Bark: young shoots blood-red, especially in spring.
Flowers: creamy umbel-like inflorescences with a strong smell.
Fruits: small black berries, inedible.
Leaves: elliptic, dark green, in autumn from wine-red to yellow-orange.
Root system: produces suckers.
Requirements: undemanding, suitable for urban conditions.
Soils: any except very acidic and sandy, not tolerant to salinity.
Note: tolerates pruning well in June (but not later).
