Chinese Kousa Dogwood
Cornus cousa cinensis
Appearance: a shrub or small tree, 5-8 m tall, 4-5 m wide, upright when young; with age the crown becomes horizontally asymmetric; moderate growth rate.
Flowers: inconspicuous, green, surrounded by attractive white bracts, sometimes with a pink tinge, long flowering period (4-6 weeks).
Fruits: pink-red, raspberry-like, edible.
Leaves: ovate, dark green, crimson in autumn.
Root system: taproot, sensitive to soil compaction.
Requirements: sun/partial shade, tolerates high temperatures, relatively winter-hardy, somewhat wind-resistant.
Soils: from acidic to neutral, grows well in humus-rich soils; on heavy soils it grows very slowly.
Note: young specimens hardly flower in the first years, but later – regularly and abundantly.
