Heartleaf bergenia up to 40 cm tall. Leaves round, heart-shaped, coarse, dark green, overwintering under the snow until spring. Flowers bell-shaped, lilac-pink or deep pink, borne in raceme-like, somewhat nodding inflorescences. Blooms in May, about 20 days after the thick-leaved bergenia. In cultivation since 1779. Cultivars with white and pale-lilac flowers are known. Hardy to -40°C.
