Family Adiantaceae. Occurs in deciduous and mixed forests in the southern Ussuri region, Sakhalin, the Southern Kurils, in Japan and China. Quite winter-hardy.

Beautiful and unusual large fern with thin pinnate fronds and a long creeping rhizome, forming dense stands. Plant height up to 80 cm. Fronds ovate, once- or twice-pinnate, but usually only the lower pair of pinnae is further divided into several pinnules. Sori are located along the lateral veins and often merge into continuous strips; indusia are absent.

Grows successfully in shade on fertile, normally moist garden soil. Does not tolerate either drought or excessive moisture. Propagated by sections of the rhizome, sometimes by spores. Used as a groundcover plant. Never spreads aggressively and does not suppress other plants. Good in shaded gardens.
