Codonopsis

Back to catalogue

Family Campanulaceae. Unusual plants, most often lianas. All 30 species included in this genus have thick fleshy roots resembling rhizomes. In the wild they occur in Japan and the Himalayas.

The inner surface of the corollas of bell-shaped flowers is often covered with spots forming a fanciful pattern. Most Codonopsis are undemanding, hardy plants, although they require winter protection. Even in summer they should be placed where there is no cold wind, which is harmful to them. They do not like to be transplanted and may not require it for many years. In cultivation, Codonopsis are usually encountered

Location: not demanding regarding soil, but prefers neutral (non-acidic) loams. Light-loving. Moisture-loving, but drought-tolerant.

Propagation: germinating fresh seeds presents no difficulty. Old seeds require cold post-sowing stratification for one to two months. Seedlings require moisture but do not like direct sunlight. Vegetative propagation is possible by horizontal layering and root cuttings.
