Clerodendrum
Clerodendrum
Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Korea, China, and Africa. There are about 400 species in the wild.
Clerodendrum thomsonae - Clerodendrum thomsonae - one of the most common species - a vine with opposite leaves up to 12 cm long, oval or ovate in shape, with irregular light and dark green spots on the upper side of the leaf. Flowers in racemose inflorescences, with a white swollen calyx and a red corolla. Towards the end of flowering the corolla falls off earlier than the calyx. There are cultivars with yellow-green leaves.
Clerodendrum splendens - Clerodendrum splendens - a twining or erect shrub with very large oval or rounded leaves, pointed at the tip, up to 20 cm long. Flowers about 3 cm in diameter are gathered in many-flowered corymbiform inflorescences, appearing from the leaf axils. The flower calyx is bell-shaped, green, and the corolla is red, with equally red long stamens.
Clerodendrum fragrans - Clerodendrum fragrans - a small subshrub with broad ovate leaves, slightly tapered at the edge. Leaves and petioles are finely pubescent. Flowers white or pink, usually double, with a light fragrance, gathered in corymb-like inflorescences.
