Occurs from Mongolia to western China. A climbing, hardy Clematis reaching up to 3 m, with pinnate or bipinnate green leaves.

A woody climber up to 3 meters tall with a strongly branching ribbed stem. Native to Central Asia. It is also used as a groundcover plant. Tolerates some shade. Prefers a sheltered position by a southwest-facing wall. Propagated by seed, cuttings, and layering.

Flowers: large, 3 to 10 cm in diameter, golden-yellow, on slightly pubescent long (8-15 cm) flower stalks, consisting of 4 pointed sepals 3-5 cm long.

Blooms: from July to September. The seed capsules are very decorative, with silky pubescence, up to 6 cm in diameter.

Leaves: pinnately divided, light green, 15-20 cm long, leaflets toothed.
