Indoor plants
Orange
Citrus sinensis
Family Rutaceae. An evergreen small tree. Leaves oval-elongated. Petioles with small wing-like appendages. Flowers white, bisexual, fragrant. The orange blooms on the branches of the current season's growth. Fruits are rounded, yellow and orange in color. Among orange cultivars are known «korolki» with red flesh. Propagation by seeds and cuttings.
Grafted orange trees begin to bear fruit in the 3rd–5th year; seedlings grown from seed start fruiting in the 8th–12th year after sowing.
The beginning of the fruiting period of seed-grown trees can be accelerated by using Michurin methods of seedling training: grafting several buds from fruiting plants into the crown, correct pruning, cutting during spring or summer sap flow from the thickest branch of the seedling a ring of bark 0.75 cm wide and grafting an identical ring from a fruiting tree.
Temperature: Oranges require light and warmth. Budding, flowering and fruit setting occur best at an average air and soil temperature of +15-18°C.
In winter oranges are recommended to be kept in a bright cool room (up to 12°C). Lack of a cold winter rest may cause the plant not to fruit.
Lighting: Bright, diffused light. They do well near east and west windows. Shade from direct sun is needed in spring and summer during the hottest hours.
