Chrysalidocarpus

Chrysalidocarpus

Back to catalogue
Family Arecaceae. Native to the island of Madagascar and the Comoro Islands. This palm is notable for its pronounced clustering — the fronds branch abundantly at the base and the plant looks very striking.

The genus includes about 20 species; as a houseplant the one most widely cultivated is Хризалидокарпус желтоватый - Сhrysalidocarpus lutescens. Its stems are smooth and green, reaching up to 12 m in height, the pinnate leaves up to 2 m long (in the wild). The petioles are densely covered with black scales. Indoors it will eventually reach the ceiling.

Temperature: Moderate, about 18-22°C. Winter minimum 16°C

Light: Chrysalidocarpus needs a bright position, shaded from direct sun. However, do not place this palm in a shaded spot. In winter the lighting should be very good.

Watering: Watering should be even; abundant in spring and summer, and moderate in winter. The pot is placed on a saucer with water, since Chrysalidocarpus uses a lot of moisture. The soil should not dry out.

Fertilizer applications are made from March to September every 2 weeks, with a special palm fertilizer or any liquid fertilizer for houseplants.

Humidity: Very much enjoys misting and a shower.

Repotting: Chrysalidocarpus is repotted annually or every two years. Soil: 2 parts light clay-sod soil, 2 parts leaf-humus soil, 1 part peat, 1 part well-rotted manure, 1 part sand and a little charcoal.
