Хионодокса Форбса

Family Hyacinthaceae. According to some sources a synonym of хионодоксы люцилии. In the wild it occurs in southern Turkey in the Ala-Dag mountains at the snowmelt line, at altitudes up to 2500 m above sea level. Known in cultivation since 1976.

Flowers blue with a white zone around the eye. The height of the plants reaches 25 cm. On the scape up to 15 flowers 1-3.5 cm in diameter, facing upwards and to the side. The inflorescence appears as a vertical loose raceme, the length of which is greater than the width. It occupies half the height of the whole plant. Forms with white and pink flowers are known for this species. The plant is triploid and does not set seeds, however it produces up to four bulb offsets on the bulb each year. It is grown in open sunny sites on fertile, well-drained soil.

Very close to хионодоксе Люцилии, from which it differs by the larger size of the whole plant and flowers. It blooms two weeks later.

'Alba' - the flowers of this garden variety have a snow-white coloration.

'Blue Giant' - the perianths of this species' plants are colored an intense blue.

'Pink Giant' - the flowers of this garden form are lavender-pink in color. Varieties in some sources are considered to have originated from хионодоксы люцилии, in others — from хианодоксы Форбса.
