Flowers for the garden

Cheilanthes

Back to catalogue

Family Adiantaceae. Small, mostly rock-dwelling, grow in dry places. Their stiff, overwintering leaves are gathered in tufts and protected from drought by scales and pubescence. The sori are marginal, merging with each other, covered by the reflexed margin of the leaf.

They reproduce by spores. They strongly dislike excessive moisture and do not tolerate transplanting well. Light-loving, drought-resistant. Coarse sand (50% by volume) is added to the soil (directly at the roots). During active growth they still require moisture in the substrate, but watering should be infrequent and careful so that water does not get on the leaves. Do not mist/spray! Suitable for cultivation on rock gardens, especially using limestone rocks.
