Cereus

Back to catalogue
Family Cactaceae. Most representatives of this genus are too large and therefore unsuitable for growing in apartments, but the few species that are cultivated as houseplants are much loved by cactus enthusiasts for their beauty and undemanding nature.

Peruvian cereus - Cereus peruvianus - the columnar stem reaches half a meter in height. It blooms at maturity with large white flowers up to 16 cm long.

Jamacaru cereus - Cereus jamacaru - a large columnar cactus, similar to the previous species, but with yellowish or whitish spines. Flowers about 20 cm in diameter, opening at night.

Besides the columnar Cereus species, their rock forms are widespread in cultivation. They are especially popular because of their peculiar shapes and beauty. Rock cereuses are propagated only vegetatively - by cuttings, and in home conditions they almost never flower.

Temperature: Moderate. In winter a resting period at 10-12°C, minimum 8°C, with dry conditions. In summer it is better to keep Cereus outdoors.

Lighting: Bright light in both winter and summer. Cereus plants like a lot of light, but they should be acclimated to direct sun in spring and summer gradually to avoid sunburn. The best place for Cereus is a windowsill of a south- or southeast-facing window.

Watering: Moderate in spring and summer, reduced from autumn, and very infrequent in winter when kept cool.

Fertilizer: Since Cereus are fast-growing cacti, they should be fed with a special cactus fertilizer from late spring to mid-summer.

Humidity: Cereus tolerate dry air, but regular misting with warm water is very beneficial.
