Catalpa bignonioides
Appearance: a small to medium-sized tree, 8-12 m in height, 4-8 m in width, crown irregular, broadly rounded, trunk short and crooked, main shoots arranged asymmetrically in a funnel shape, slow-growing, 10-20 cm per year.
Flowers: inflorescences white, panicle-like, 15-30 cm, late June - July, individual flowers yellowish with raspberry speckling.
Fruits: very decorative brown pods, 15-40 cm long.
Leaves: large, heart-shaped, emerge very late, in early June, light green, drop early, autumn color – yellow.
Root system: deep, unbranched, sensitive to mechanical damage.
Requirements: sun/partial shade, very tolerant of high temperatures and drought, not winter-hardy, sheltered location.
Soils: rich, deep, loamy substrates.
Note: does not form well.
