Family: Betulaceae. Name: the old Latin name of the genus.

Description: includes more than 30 species, occurring in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere.

Deciduous trees, less often shrubs, with sturdy shoots and very hard wood. Leaves alternate, dark green, pubescent beneath. Flowers unisexual, without a perianth. Fruit a flattened, broadly ovoid, longitudinally-ribbed nutlet. All species are ornamental. Tolerate pruning well. Used in solitary and group plantings in parks and forest parks, and in the creation of large living hedges.
