Tree up to 5-6 (12) m tall.
var. virginiana (March.) Fern. - Carolina hornbeam var. virginiana. Tree up to 12 m tall. In the southeastern part of North America within the range of the main species. Mesophyte, mesotherm, mesotroph. In cultivation in collections of botanical gardens in Europe and North America. At GBS since 1967 1 specimen (4 individuals) was grown from seeds obtained from Ottawa. After frost damage in the winter of 1978/79 it grows in a shrub-like form, height 3.9 m, crown diameter 400 cm. It leafs out, flowers and fruits at the same times as the typical species. Growth rate moderate. Winter hardiness moderate. Seed germination average. Can be used to a limited extent for landscaping in Moscow.
