Bacopa caroliniana
Васора caroliniana
Bacopa caroliniana is a long-stemmed plant with bright green succulent oval leaves up to 2.5 cm long, arranged oppositely on the stems.
The plant is very undemanding, multiplies quickly and is therefore widely kept by aquarists. In artificial water bodies it grows throughout the year.
Keep bacopa in temperate or tropical aquariums. It grows satisfactorily at 20–26 °C. In colder water growth slows and older leaves begin to rot. Bacopa caroliniana prefers soft water with neutral to slightly acidic reaction. At water hardness above 6–8° the plant becomes smaller and its leaves sometimes deform. Water may be fresh or older. Accumulation of organic matter in the aquarium does not have an inhibitory effect on the plant's growth. Bacopa leaves are fairly resistant to fouling and to the settling of organic and mineral particles.
Lighting should preferably be bright. In deep aquariums bacopa suffers primarily from lack of light. In aquaria deeper than 30 cm it is better to place it in a separate shallow dish on a side shelf raised closer to the lights, or to provide side lighting. Natural, and especially diffused sunlight, is very beneficial to the plant. For artificial lighting it is best to use LB-type fluorescent tubes; incandescent lamps may also be used. Lamp power is selected individually. Artificial and natural light can be combined in any way. A photoperiod of at least 12 hours is desirable.
