Calceolaria
Calceolaria
Family: Scrophulariaceae. Native to South America. The genus name comes from the Latin calceolatus — slipper — from the shape of the two-lipped distinctive flower. There are about 200 species of this plant in the wild.
The only species that has become widespread in cultivation is Calceolaria herbeohybrida. Calceolaria grows up to 50 cm in height. The flowers may be solid-colored or variously colored (marbled, tiger-striped, red or white with dark speckles). Propagation of Calceolaria at home is very difficult, so it is best to buy a plant that is already in bloom.
Undoubtedly Calceolaria is a very beautiful plant, but unfortunately it only delights with its beauty during flowering, which lasts rather briefly - 6-8 weeks. To avoid damaging the plant, try to transport it from the store in careful packaging so that the leaves and flowers do not get crushed and are not exposed to wind and cold air.
Temperature: Calceolaria prefers a cool room, 12-15 °С. In rooms that are too warm it drops buds or flowers.
Lighting: Bright, diffused light is preferred; it does not tolerate direct sunlight. It is good to place it on the windowsill of an east-, north- or northwest-facing window.
Watering: Abundant; the root ball should not dry out.
