Back to catalogue
Family Cabombaceae. In nature, Cabomba caroliniana occurs from North to South America. It grows in standing and flowing bodies of water with flow from slow to fast, at depths down to 1.5 m.

Cabomba caroliniana is a long-stemmed plant widely popular among aquarium hobbyists. It adapts well to different conditions, grows quickly, and actively participates in the cycling of nutrients in the aquarium. Stands of Cabomba provide excellent shelter for fry and are often used as a spawning substrate by many fish. This plant can be cultivated in aquariums of any size. It is best placed in the background, where it forms a magnificent lacy curtain. Cabomba grows evenly throughout the year.

Regarding care for Cabomba caroliniana, it is relatively undemanding. The plant can be kept in a moderately warm aquarium at a temperature of 18-22 °C and in a tropical aquarium with water temperature above 24 °C. Cabomba prefers water hardness below 8°, with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction (pH 5.5-6.8). It can be acclimated to harder water, but then it grows more slowly and its leaves become smaller. Cabomba caroliniana prefers clean water. In turbid water it collects particles of silt and loses its attractiveness. If sediment is not removed in time, old leaves die off quickly. Water changes in the aquarium should be performed regularly 3-4 times a month.

Lighting should be fairly strong. With insufficient light the plant begins to stretch, its coloration becomes dull and takes on a yellowish tint. Both natural and artificial light are suitable for illuminating an aquarium where Cabomba grows. The approximate power of fluorescent lamps should be 0.4-0.5 W per 1 L of aquarium volume. The length of the light period should be at least 12 hours.
