Family Poaceae. Native to almost all of Europe, Western and Eastern Siberia.
A perennial grass with creeping rhizomes, forming turf clumps. Stems 60-125 cm tall, smooth, unbranched, rough below the inflorescence. Leaves rough, 4-7 mm wide. Panicle up to 25 cm long, greenish or lilac, fluffy, laterally compressed, with many spikelets and sharply rough branches. There are hybrid cultivars with golden, narrower panicles; they are propagated by division of the clump.
