Browallia

Browallia

Back to catalogue
Family: Solanaceae. Native to South America. These are mainly herbaceous plants. The most common species is Browallia speciosa. Plants of this species form a branched bush up to 35 cm tall and bloom, depending on the cultivar, with light blue, lilac, blue or white flowers. Leaves of Browallia are light green on thin stems. Browallia is a short-lived plant. Seeds are sown every year; they germinate easily, and the plant begins flowering very quickly, with quite abundant blooms under favorable conditions. At the end of flowering the plants are discarded.

Browallia is probably better suited for balcony culture than for indoor cultivation. On a south- or west-facing balcony, if it is not shaded by trees, it will be too hot on sunny days. The best location is an east-facing balcony.

If you grow Browallia from seed to decorate a balcony or loggia, move the seedlings outside permanently only after the danger of early spring frosts has passed. In autumn, with the onset of cold days, the plants will die.
