Family: the onion family. On heavy soils of the upper subtropical and lower forest belts of the Pacific coast of North America from British Columbia to the Mexican border. The most widespread species in the wild and in cultivation.

Stem 20 - 50 cm tall. Leaves rounded, 0.2 cm thick. Flower stalk 3 - 8 cm long. Flowers 2 - 11, purple, 3 - 4 cm long, with a funnel-shaped tube. Anthers up to 1 cm long. Fruit - a capsule. 2n = 12, 24, 36, 42. Blooms in June.
