Flowers for the garden
Bomarea
Bomarea
Family Alstroemeriaceae. Description: this genus comprises more than 100 species native to South America and includes climbing plants with long, multi-meter stems.
They form unusual inflorescences. Bomareas are not frost-hardy, so they are cultivated either outdoors as seasonal annuals, or indoors and in greenhouses as perennials. In winter the above-ground parts of the plants are cut back completely to ground level. With the arrival of spring from rhizomes new shoots emerge. During growth and flowering the clumps should be watered and fertilized abundantly, and kept dry during winter.
